Pembrokeshire Social Housing Register Closed to New Applications Under Old Rules as Major Policy Overhaul Begins

Pembrokeshire's social housing waiting list stopped accepting new applications under its existing rules on 1 August 2026, as the county council and its housing association partners launched a root-and-branch overhaul of the way homes are allocated to those most in need.

The revised policy has been developed jointly by Pembrokeshire County Council, ateb, Wales and West Housing, Barcud and Codi (formerly Pobl) Housing Associations. The council says the changes reflect mounting pressure on housing and homelessness services across the county, as well as recent shifts in Welsh housing legislation.

Anyone who submits a new application from 1 August will have it held in the system and assessed once the replacement policy is formally implemented, which is scheduled for October 2026. No applications made after that date under the old framework will be processed.

What happens to existing applicants?

People already on the housing register will not be left in the dark. The council has confirmed that over the coming weeks every current applicant will be contacted directly to explain exactly what the policy changes mean for them and what steps, if any, they will need to take to stay on the waiting list.

The updated framework is designed to maintain a fair and consistent approach to allocating the county's limited social housing stock, with priority directed towards those assessed as being in the greatest need. The council and its housing association partners say the collaborative approach to drafting the policy is intended to create a single, unified system across the county rather than separate processes for each landlord.

The timing matters for anyone hoping to secure a social rented home in Pembrokeshire before the end of 2026. Prospective applicants cannot register under the new rules until October, meaning there is currently no route onto the formal waiting list for new entrants.
